Did you know that the government has made it illegal to carry out, offer, or aid and abet virginity testing or hymenoplasty in any part of the UK, as well as for UK nationals and residents to do these things outside the UK, as part of the Health and Care Act 2022?

The Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) has subsequently published non-statutory guidance for those who may come into contact with people affected by virginity testing and hymenoplasty.

The DHSC says that the multi-agency guidance should be read and followed by all persons and organisations across the UK who have a duty and due regard to the safeguarding of children in their care – this includes governing boards of maintained schools and trust boards of academies.

To make implementing the changes as easy as possible, we’ve released an article to get you up-to-speed with the key points of the guidance.

We’ve also updated our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy to reflect the new guidance so you can get your policy up to date with crucial changes in five minutes.
